5 Simple Ways to Enhance Your Ogunquit Maine Vacation

Although there are certainly many ways to spice up a long awaited Ogunquit vacation, we wanted to write a brief list showing 5 things (just about all of which are year round) you may consider to spice up the overall enjoyment of your trip.

Keep in mind that as you read the following ideas they are just that-- ideas, and by no means a requisite to having a beautiful vacation in Ogunquit. As we always say, it’s better to be on vacation in Ogunquit without all the bells and whistles than it is to have the perfect vacation with every option you ever dreamed of......in your head.

HPmarginalwayWithout further ado, here goes:

  1. The Fancy Restaurant: Stuffy restaurants, especially if you’re considering packing lite, have gone the way of the dinosaur in Ogunquit. We’re not really sure anyone ever did enjoy having a personal napkin folder standing at attention. And to this we say good riddance. Approachable fine dining shares amazing food, great memories and good conversation. Often times, the right restaurant creates that ‘homey’ feel so many are looking for. Yes, you can still get dressed up – just now you can spill breadcrumbs on the table. Good spots to go fancy, not stuffy: The Velveteen Habit, MC Perkins Cove, David’s KPT, Northern Union.
  1. The Romantic Spot: This can be a bit tricky when traveling with kids but have no fear. In Ogunquit, you really can’t go wrong with Marginal Way. Even if the kiddos are on the adventure too, while they explore the rocks, you and your spouse can site hand in hand on one of the many benches. Marginal Way just has the effect on people. Maybe it’s the soothing waves, maybe the scent of the ocean – whatever it is, it’s the perfect spot to reconnect. Good spots to park: The lookout point just north of Perkins Cove. The path has a little extra loop – you might even sneak in a kiss and really gross out the kids.
  1. The Sweet Stuff: At some point, almost everyone sees Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s a rite of passage. It’s also darn near the stuff of reality at Harbor Candy Shop in Ogunquit center. From the quaint store front to the intoxicating smell of chocolate upon entering, you’ll think you found a golden ticket. Homemade fudge, turtles and these little raspberry baskets – plus buckets of sugary glory waiting for you to make your very own bag of goodies. It’s like hitting the candy bullseye (which you can also enjoy). Good spot to see: Head all the way inside to watch candy being made and see an entire wall of truffles.
  1. The Fresh Air: Maine is vacationland – so get out and enjoy it. Whether that’s a winter afternoon in the outdoor hot tub or a summer day walking the beach, you’ve got to get outside to get into Maine. There are a couple of rather ‘undiscovered’ ways to get your fair share of that Maine fresh air: Ogunquit River paddle boarding and Mt. A hiking. While Ogunquit Beach is definitely the main attraction, these two spots make for a special experience. You’ll encounter amazing birdlife paddling up the River and see the estuaries up close. As the highest point in Southern Maine, Mt. A offers outstanding views of the entire coastline. Yeah, sure you can drive to the top, but remember, it’s all about the fresh air. Good spots to catch the best views: On the River, just into Wells, the pretty line up of beach cottages facing the ocean. On the Mountain, just off to the right of the lookout house, there is a picnic table to gaze out at the Nubble Lighthouse.
  1. EDBMsubhomepgThe Lobster: Assuming that you want what the locals got. Well, it’s not just lobster. There’s a couple of snack spots that may not look like much, but you’ll find us there. Anyway, say hi, be friendly and don’t mess too much with what you order. When in Maine, do like the Mainers. Good spots: The Lobster Shack, Perkins Cover; Flo’s Hot Dogs, Route 1 Cape Neddick; Cornerstone, Lobster Pizza, Ogunquit Village Center; Billy’s Chowder House Homemade Bar Chips, Wells; Barnacle Billy’s Steamers & Rum Punch, Perkins Cove; The Clam Shack, Fried Clams, Kennebunkport.

There you go, five simple ways to enhance your Ogunquit Maine Vacation. If you are ready to get those plans in place, give us a call or check out the hotel at meadowmere.com . There's also our handy "Things to Do in Ogunquit" section for more tips.

Tips on Creating Gift Bags for Your Maine Wedding Guests

GiftbagAmong the many, many things that go into planning a wedding in Maine, inevitably the question of wedding gift bags comes up. Do you or don't you? And if you do, what exactly goes into a wedding gift bag?

If you want to create a great first impression for your guests traveling to your Maine wedding, greeting your guests with a bag full of goodies is a start to a memorable weekend. There are simple options - such as rolling and tying an information sheet on your wedding activities - and there are extravagant baskets with monogrammed shirts and custom label candies. More often creating gift bags for your Maine wedding guests does not have to be a stressful or time consuming chore or a quick after thought.

Here are tips to creating gift bags for your Maine Wedding:

  • Make it Heart Felt: Rather than a quick "We-are-so-happy-you-are here-to-celebrate-us-please be-at-the-ceremony-at-this-time" message, take a moment to share your story in welcome letter. This is your chance to share why you fell in love with each other or with Maine and maybe save having to tell the story over and over again at the reception (when you would much rather be dancing!). It doesn't have to be a novel - just a simple sweet paragraph. And once you figure this part out, feel free to type it up for easy printing on stationary that fits your theme, even if it's just one of your wedding colors. A hand signature space let's you sign for a personal touch.
  • Water, water everywhere: Your guests will be walking into a hotel room after traveling and one of the best ways to refresh is hydrating. It's easy to give this a Maine touch - simply include Poland Spring water bottles. If you can't bear to be so plain, add a Maine-ah favorite with Moxie to your wedding gift bag.
  • Sweet, sweet treats: Everyone has a favorite candy from when they were a kid. Include your and your sweethearts. Then add a little something extra from a local chocolatier, such as Harbor Candy, to bring a touch of Ogunquit to your gift.
  • WeddingMeadowmereIt's the Destination Baby: Ogunquit, Beautiful Place by the Sea. So why not help your guests explore? Ask the Ogunquit Chamber for touring maps and guidebooks to include in your gift bags. Not only is this a great time saver, but guests will be able to swap stories of what they have explored during cocktail hour. With the Meadowmere Resort's central location to Ogunquit Beach, Marginal Way, Ogunquit Playhouse, shops, restaurants and more, they'll have lots to talk about!
  • Now Your Jammin': Want to have something custom labeled, local to Southern Maine and long lasting? Create a custom label Stonewall Kitchen Jam Jar for your wedding gift bags. Based in York Maine, Stonewall Kitchen features delicious Maine Blueberry Jam. Pick from different size jars, create a message and share one of Maine's most wonderful locally made products. Of course, it may not last long after your Maine wedding once they try it!
  • Send them to Sea: Once your guests have journeyed to the Southern Maine Coast, a nice touch is to share one of most unique ways to see Ogunquit - by sea. With sunset cruises each night in season, you can include a ticket aboard the FinestKind for your guests to use during their stay. It's an easy and fun way to share a ride aboard a Maine Lobster boat and past the rocky coastline and Nubble Lighthouse. Worried that you have land lovers? Send to close to the sea then with a pass to the Ogunquit Museum of American Art - home to some of Maine's finest art and most beautiful gardens. And with gift shop, they can finda Maine treasure to take home.

Want to get more creative ideas? Check out wedding welcome gift bags and baskets at The Knot.

Worried about how to get gift bags to all your guests? Don't be! At the Meadowmere Resort, we make it easy - With any of our official wedding blocks, simply drop off your gift bags and we take it from there.  Contact our wedding sales today for your Ogunquit Maine wedding accommodations. And remember, the best tip we can give you for creating gift bags for your Maine wedding is to enjoy each moment of your very special day!

  • The Meadowmere Resort has long been a family vacation favorite. Named Best Southern Maine Family Resort by Family Fun magazine, our Ogunquit hotel features oodles of amenities for the little ones. Of course Mom and Dad are traveling too and sometimes all those toys from home that helped make the car ride so good, end up scattered all over the hotel room. Janet was cleaning a family's room and the stuffed animals were everywhere. She carefully searched under beds and arranged the toys on the bed to welcome everyone back after a day of fun. Giving Mom and Dad one less thing to worry about or step on! (And here's a tip - if you forget a cherished toy at home, check out Animal Instinct in Ogunquit for a new addition to the toy family. It's a wonderful local shop - you'll feel like a kid)
  • KidbookOur team at our Ogunquit resort realize that one of the many reasons to travel is to recharged. In fact, it seems some of our guests are so in need of rest, coffee is the only way to get started. Rowan noticed that one of her guests had gone thru extra coffee and she made sure to give them plenty for the next morning's tank. The guest was so happy that she sought Rowan out to say thank you for such a wonderful personal touch. And if you need a pick me when in Ogunquit and our handy in room coffee makers or wonderful Maine made coffee is not nearby, try Bread & Roses or Village Food Market - Ogunquit features local shops, no Starbucks here.)
  • At the Meadowmere Resort in Ogunquit, one of our many hotel amenities is a library area filled with puzzles, old fashioned board games and real books. We know that sometimes a trip back in time and away from anything iphone, ipad or internet makes the best memories and gives true relaxation. Janet was helping a guest who mentioned she just was not finding a book to her liking in our library. Janet told her about Annie's Book Stop on Route 1 in Wells and then retreived the phone number with directions so that the guest could find that perfect book. The guest was impressed with the thoughtful suggestion and extra step!

In fact, your room can even come with a hot tub - with Spring deals the value of our Ogunquit hotel's Luxury Suites is amazing. Our Maine resort's Honeymoon Suites received a wonderful recognition as the Best Place to Honeymoon in New England.

Syrup so good, it's a good thing this travel mug was found!

  • Janet was checking the Fitness Center at the Meadowmere Resort and inspecting the ladies locker room area. She found a travel mug left behind and decide to check the health club area for any ladies that may be using the hotel gym. After taking the time to check with several women, Janet found the owner of the travel mug who was surprised and delighted - she had completely forgotten about it! Janet taking a few minutes to go this extra mile saved her from a visit to Lost N Found and made the guest's day.
  • Right tighty, left losey. But sometimes one doesn't know their own strength and righty tighty becomes can't turn on the shower. Jodi was cleaning a room when a guest asked her for help - she had been struggling to turn the shower on and had just plumb given up. Jodi happily gave it a twist and set it losely off so that the guest could easily adjust when and how she would like. The guest was grateful for the help and Jodi quickly and discretely helping her.

This Week's Stories!

Just because it's not summer doesn't mean you can't enjoy a weekend getaway! Come visit our southern Maine resort as a mini-vacation. At Jonathan's, the James Montgomery Band is playing so get your tickets and enjoy a marvelous meal by Jonathan's incredible staff. Please enjoy our employee stories below about possible winter getaways or romantic celebrations the Meadowmere Resort can become a part of.

•  Brrrrr... Winter's chill is certainly upon us, and many guests were here at our Southern Maine resort while these snow flurries began. Cocoa For one couple, their heat was being awfully stubborn one morning. Our maintenance team assisted immediately but informed the guests that fixing the heat was not salvageable that day. The guests were assisted in moving to a new room. As it was such an inconvenience, our front desk agent, Ellyse delivered hot cocoa to the new room to be waiting for the guests with a note thanking them for being so patient.

  • Janet, our housekeeper, was busy cleaning a room while the guest was relaxing there as well. Janet noticed that the guest looked rather uncomfortable. The guest said she hurt her back and would be up in bed all day. Janet offered to provide extra pillows to help the guest get more comfortable and it really helped her rest easier.

• The Meadowmere Resort is well-known for its romantic getaways and this past weekend was a very special weekend for one particular couple. As a regular guest, this young gentleman was planning a proposal. ChampWhile out at dinner he was hoping the flowers and champagne he pre-ordered to be delivered, so our front desk agent Lauren prepared the room accordingly and the guests were absolutely thrilled! The flowers were set on the nearby table with a hand written note by the guest, rose petals sprinkled around the room, and chilled champagne avec flutes awaiting their return. At check out the gentleman was so ecstatic with the turnout.

This Week's Stories!

This week was a busy one here at the Meadowmere Resort for romantic Maine getaways. Multiple couples were here celebrating their anniversaries and birthdays to stay here in our luxurious suites. Many enjoyed packages including a romantic dinner at either Jonathan's or the Old Village Inn. Who's to say you shouldn't join us as well ~ Come celebrate!

• Trisha, one of our housekeepers, was servicing a guest's room when she noticed they had a bottle of wine iced in a bucket. Sadly the ice had melted. CorkTrisha took it upon herself to fill the bucket with new ice so the guests could enjoy a nice glass once they returned back to their room. Trisha also spoke to guests whose AC was not working properly. She assisted the guests to adjust the thermostat and followed up to make sure the issue was resolved.

• Whitney, one of our housekeepers, saw guests in the parking lot looking a bit confused so Whitney approached them to find out the guests were lost. Whitney assisted them to their room in the Main Building and the guests were extremely appreciative.

•  Stuart, one of our front desk agents, received a call for a wine and cheese basket to be sent to a room of which we had no existing reservation. Leo-cullum-we-d-love-to-but-we-had-too-much-wine-and-cheese-in-the-eighties-new-yorker-cartoonThe daughter was looking to surprise her parents with an in room gift. This naturally heightened her concern that her parents did not have a reservation. The parents soon called with a invalid confirmation number as they were hoping to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Stuart found a junior suite available with a luxurious king size bed and jacuzzi suite. The couple eventually pieced together their reservation was at a different hotel so that was cancelled and they enjoyed a wonderful stay here at the Meadowmere!

  • Surprise surprise! The Meadowmere loves nothing more than a celebration! For a lucky lady this week it was a proposal. The soon to be fiancé upon check in slipped that he was proposing in hopes of making a memorable experience. The front desk advised Matt, our evening runner, of the arrangements. The guest had requested a bottle of champagne be delivered to the room while they were out for dinner and also had some cloth flower petals that he wished to have spread through the room. Matt did as the guest wished and also added a few embellishments of his own including a heart shaped towel on the bed and a box of chocolates, he was careful to remove the Meadowmere card so that the guest could take full credit for the room set up. The guest called later in the evening to let us know that it was a success she said YES and once again thank Matt for his efforts. Romantic Maine getaways always guarenteed a YES!
  • Warm blankets and cozy cuddles...One of our guests requested that the blankets on her bed be changed as she was allergic to the current type on the bed, Ceila retrieved two different types of blankets for the guest to review before completing the linen change for the guest. The guest was delighted and was impressed with Celia's attention to detail and the fact that she gave the guest a choice.
