More to Maine than Moose - Enjoying Maine Sea Animals by Motor Coach

Whale tale

When it comes to wildlife Maine is known for its lobsters along with its moose which is why so many groups joining our great state enjoy a lobster bake, moose safari and lobster boat tours.  And although Lobsters come from the sea, with almost 230 miles of beautiful coastline Maine’s sea animals are plenty and offer’s much more than the delicious crustacean the state is famous for.

So when you’re planning your next group adventure in Maine consider the hundreds of miles of coastline, the greatest tide ranges in the world and over 3,000 species of marine life, the Gulf of Maine Supports

Here are our Top Five favorites for Maine Sea Animal Life (not including Maine Lobstah) and the Top Three Ways to experience them by Motor Coach.

Top Five Maine Sea Animals

Maine Coast Harbor Seals
Maine Coast Harbor Seals

1. Whales have an important role in the overall health of the marine environment and even after decades of protection more than half the species of whales are classified as endangered of vulnerable.  Whether you’re looking to fill up the days itinerary, provide education or offer an amazing experience to your guests - enjoying the Giants of the Ocean is sure to make you’re Maine Trip a success.

2. Dolphins never seem to lose interest in playing often they are seen blowing bubbles, balancing seaweed and chasing each other.  They are known for bow-riding (swimming along ships to conserve energy) so the chances of catching a glimpse of these playful creatures leaping out of the water is fairly good aboard a Maine vessel.

3. Harbor Seals can be seen enjoying the Rocky Maine Coast, late spring is considered the best time to enjoy watching harbor seals as they come ashore with their pups.  The mother seal will look after the pup for about three to four weeks and are generally seen in smaller groups.

4. Bluefin Tuna can commonly weigh 500 pounds and are one of the largest fish you’ll find in the Gulf of Maine.  With a body shaped like a torpedo these fish are known for their speed and have been known to reach speeds up to 100 mph although they generally swim at a little over 4 mph.  They are seen off shore while deep sea fishing or whale watching between June and September.

5. Porpoise are more often seen in the spring and fall in Maine, unlike the dolphin the harbor porpoise is shy and not inclined to approach boats.  Because they prefer the shallows (less than 500 ft) they can be seen from shoreline boat cruises or off the shores in harbors, bays or rivers.

Top Three Maine Sea Animal Experiences

Maine Lobster Museum
Maine Lobster Museum

1. Whale Watching in Maine starts in mid April as the worlds largest living creatures make their way to our beautiful coastline to feast in Maine’s rich waters.  The season for whales in Maine lasts until October when they head south to warmer seas, in these seven months your group will experience  the displays of humpback, finback, minke, right whales and so many more species aboard a number of vessels.  As your group travels miles out to sea the chances are you’ll experience a lot more than just whales such as dolphins, tuna and porpoise.

2.  Maine State Aquarium is located on the water in West Boothbay Harbor Maine.  This educational facility is operated by the Maine Department of Marine Resources and open seasonally.  The aquarium features extraordinary lobsters up to 23 lbs and in various colors along with live sharks and skates in the touch tank, sea stars, sea urchins even sea cucumbers and scallops.  The Aquarium offers free passes to motor coach drivers and with rates as low as $5.00 per person it’s sure to fit into any group budget!

3.  Nubble Lighthouse Cruise aboard the Finest Kind in Perkins Cove Ogunquit is the perfect way to experience a bit of marine life without a full days commitment.  With this scenic tour your group will enjoy beautiful views along the rocky Maine coast including the most photographed light house in Maine and a chance to see harbor seals, the occasional dolphin before heading back to shore to enjoy the shops and cuisine of the most beautiful place by the sea.

How to Lobster like a Maine-ah – Group Tour Ideas for Spring in Ogunquit Maine

Maine Lobstah
Maine Lobstah

A true Maine-ah knows that best Lobst-ahs are the shedders or soft shell lobsters, and although there’s novelty in eating that great big Lobst-ah, all the tastiest meat is found in the 1-pounders.  That’s why springing into Ogunquit Maine in May or June will ensure your Group a genuine Maine Lobst-ah experience – just like the locals.

At the Meadowmere Resort we know a thing or two about Maine Lobsters – here’s what you need to know to ensure your group gets the most from your Maine Group Tour:

For lobsters, molting is an ongoing process, lobsters grow throughout their lives and with a hard inelastic shell they are forced to continuously shed the old and grow anew.  As the water begins to warm up in the spring lobsters begin the shed, after a few days of hiding in secluded areas of the ocean floor the lobster emerges and begins to regain its normal activities.  It can take several months for a lobster’s new shell to fully harden, which is why your group will enjoy a soft shell lobster in May and June.

An account from James Rosier in 1605 noted that lobsters were so plentiful that a single net thrown off the shore produced thirty lobsters!  The state of Maine speculates that lobstering may very well be the oldest and continuously operated industry in North America.

To preserve this marine resource and the livelihood of our lobsterman there are very strict rules and regulations within the industry.  Such regulations includes size, each lobsterman must have a special gauge that measures the body shell length of a lobster, A legal lobster in the State of Maine measures between 3 ¼ inches and 5 inches between the extreme rear of the eye socket to the end of the lobsters body.  This measurement regulation paired with preserving fertile female lobsters ensures the continual growth of the lobster population.

Experience the art of lobstering in Perkins Cove with a 50 minute educational tour aboard the FinestKind.  The Hubbard Family has more than seven generations native to Ogunquit, Maine and began this family boat charter in the 1950’s inspired by the love of Maine’s Coastline.   On board their Lobstering Trip your group will experience the industry first hand as traps are haulded and lobsters caught by an authentic Maine Lobsterman.  Your tour guide will provide a detailed explanation of the lobster fishery along with the many scenic points of interest along the Maine Coast.  You haven’t seen Maine until you’ve seen it from the sea – with discount group rates the FinestKind can’t be beat.

Maine Lobster
Maine Lobster

Home to the most scenic Lighthouse in the State, York Maine is just a 15 minute drive from the hotel and the best place for your group to enjoy an authentic Maine Lobster Bake at Fosters.  Yet another native Family Business since the 1950’s, Foster’s Downeast Clambake offer’s your group a genuine Maine experience with a traditional Clambake featuring the freshest Maine Lobster.  For lobster “newbies” the local staff will even show you how to eat a Maine Lobster and provide lobster bibs for the whole group!  They truly are “fostering” a Maine tradition.

Perkins Cove not only hosts the fishery of lobstering, this charming harbor is also where you can find some of the best lobster rolls in Maine.  As your groups steps off the FinestKind or the Marginal Way Path they’ll find unique Maine Shops, Homemade Candies and genuine take out eateries featuring the best lobster rolls around.  A stroll across one of the last remaining wooden draw-footbridges in the United States offers a unique view of the fascinating life of this little port and its lobsterman.

Ogunquit Maine Revvs up for Vintage Car Fans

GreatraceVroom, vroom! There is something special about a classic car. And some of the cars that joined us for the Great Race 2014 were so old, they had wooden wheels! Wow!  Ogunquit Maine was the starting line for the Great Race, which began at the Main Beach in Ogunquit and will complete 2100 miles later in Florida. Check out our Ogunquit resort's facebook page for images and links. With over 100 vintage cars and an enormous support staff, Ogunquit certainly kicked off the season in good company! Summer at our Maine resort is a special time and starting the summer with tommy cars, punch buggies, cadillacs, bentleys and hudson cars made tis past week at the Meadowmere Resort an amazing experience. Now this was a multi year planning process to create the 2014 Great Race - but that doesn't mean a car fan has to work that hard to enjoy Southern Maine.

Here are some tips on planning a car club outing in Ogunquit:

  • Get together: Reserve early enough to have a block of rooms - say 20 or more - set aside. This allows the group you are bringing to Maine to be close together. One of the most popular locations at the Meadowmere Resort is the Country Squire. With shared patios, the club can hang out outside together, as well as have easy access to the cars. Heck, our hotel even has a hose hook up just in case there's a little dirt in a wheel!
  • Get Food: One of the most challenging activities to plan is a group meal. Renting a restaurant or finding one that is large enough can be time consuming and expensive. Have no fear - the Eat Drink Be Merry package can be modified to accommodate a group with breakfast onsite (so one can get up and get going - see point 3) and dinner at Jonathan's Restaurant (so one can have fun with all the club members - see point 1). Best part is after driving up to the Meadowmere Resort, your car club can register and unwind with a wine welcome.
  • Get Driving: Southern Maine is perfect for day trip driving from the Meadowmere Resort. From corvette clubs to porsche to classic cars to Harleys (hey bikes count too!), no matter what you drive, you will enjoy Ogunquit. To the north, Kennebunkport, South Portland, Portland have museums, shopping and scenic drives by Walker Point, lighthouses and Old Port. To the west, Sanford, Berwicks and Eliot have antiques, country side and some of the best spots to grab an ice cream cone. To the south, York, Kittery and Portsmouth have beaches, history and Mt. Agamenticus, Southern Maine's highest point. An easy drive to feel on top of the world. And not a bad spot to enjoy that ice cream cone!

In Ogunquit Maine, at our Ogunquit hotel, a car or motorcycle club can explore all day and relax all night. And on the off chance that you need a break from driving, the Meadowmere Resort is a few minutes walk to Marginal Way, Ogunquit village and Ogunquit Beach. Sometimes a walk is just the right pace to enjoy our special Maine home. Speaking of parking, here's this weeks service stories :

  • Romanspa2Joining our Ogunqut hotel for the first time can be disorientating. You've just arrived, want to park, settle in , unpack and unwind. Whitney noticed a guest checking in to the Main building was a bit turned around. While helping the guest find her room, she asked about help with the luggage. The guest then remembered that her sister had been in the parking lot this whole time waiting to figure out thebest place to park. The guest couldn't believe she had forgetten all about that! Whitney said please do not worry and then went to get the sister, directing the car to the ideal place and showing the sister where the room was. The guest inside was so grateful, she gave Whitney a big hug.
  • Our Roman Spa oftens is exciting. So much so that guests often forget to bring along pool towels. When Trisha spotted guests looking for the Roman Spa, she noticed that they did not have an pool towels. The guest sthen asked where to get them - Trish let the guests know that towels are available at the front desk but she would be happy to go get them towels so they could begin to enjoy the Spa. The guests were thrilled to be able to jump right in!

Motorcoach Bus and Traveling Tips

When traveling with a group on a tour bus, there are many things to consider while planning such a trip. First includes the tour bus itself and the company you will be traveling with. They must be entertaining to enjoy all the views and hot spots! Download

When seeking a hotel to stay at on your guided tour, it is imperative that you find the accommodations you are looking for. Here at the Meadowmere Resort, many tour groups are attracted to the quality and quantity of our amenities on property that are all inclusive with the group’s experience.

On our property tour members are welcomed to our indoor and outdoor pools and Jacuzzis, on site Movie Theater, game room, and pub which offers continental breakfast in season. It works out very nicely that way guests do not feel the need to leave the property while traveling with a bus. Upon arrival, we welcome you personally and provide a wine and cheese reception in our pub.

We are a five minute walk to the center of town with a trolley stop right next to our building for easy access to get to either Ogunquit Center or Perkins Cove. Right next to our property and the trolley stop, is a fabulous restaurant called Jonathan’s. For many groups interested in group dinners, Jonathan’s is the place to go. Classic Car Clubs - Tips to Enjoying Ogunquit

Bessie1 We're pretty big fans of the car clubs here are the Meadowmere. With special parking, room locations, packages and more than a few staff compliments waiting for your vehicle, we've seen quite a few engines roar. From custom ordered corvettes to the classics - we even have an in house beauty affectionately known as Bessie. She makes her appearances in the Spring and Fall when the sun is shining and our fearless Stu treats her for a drive.

So in dedication to Bessie, here are a few tips to enjoy Ogunquit Maine and the Meadowmere as a car club:

  • Be sure to book your group early for the West Meadow or, if you are a large party, the Country Squire locations. This way, you'll have reserved parking to welcome the club upon arrival. Bessie2
  • Check out CruiseMaine.net to find spots to stop and routes to drive state wide. Also feel free to ask us about local routes if you have something special in mind. The best and most scenic dirving routes in Southern Maine are all easy to reach from Ogunquit. We've help many a corvette club explore the back roads - all paved of course!

  • Let us know if you need hoses, buckets or rags - gotta make her shine! It's also important to know the car washes in the area and we are happy to make recommendations on who knows how to take good care of your car.Bessie3

  • Remember that parking for a large car club can be a challenge at restaurants and around Ogunquit. We can help find restaurants open to car clubs in Southern Maine and advise you on local parking rates and accessibility.

  • Of course, car clubs are about hanging out with all your friends (and the drive). So after exploring a road with a few great corners and feeling the sea breeze (open windows, top down - gotta love the smell of the ocean), we can help arrange some fun at the West Meadow Pub or at Jonathan's. There's even a package option for your car group.Bessie4

  • Finally, there's nothing like a little friendly competition among car enthusiasts! From finding a drive in or local car show to organizing a staff favorite vote - our hotel is happy to find a way to help show off your beauty and have a little fun in Ogunquit!

So now that the weather is good, remember to look for Bessie and start those engines!
