Hungry? We've got just the place!

Perhaps everyone here at the Meadowmere missed their calling by being at an Oguquit hotel. We seem to gather a lot of information about where to eat (also known as try a lot of restaurants). What can we say? We're a hungry crowd and the Seacoast is fortunate to have wonderful restaurants. Since may of our guests ask us to provide recommendations, it's really all in the name of good service!

To help share a bit of our restaurant knowledge, we've made a calendar of local deals. Fron wine dinners to Cloud 9 menus, community nights to prime rib specials (yes - Stu approved!), you can find out what delicious deals may be going on during your stay with us and add the deal to your calendar so you don't forget.

Now we're just getting started and of course, deals are more of an off season item - but if you find a good one during your travels, please share - we'd love to know!

Stu's Review . . . East Restaurant

Slide_3 Stu's back  - and breaking out of the prime rib mode!

East is a new restaurant, opened by the same owners that previously operated Yum Mee's in Ogunquit. The new restaurant is located on Route 1 in Wells, just north of the Meadowmere, in a brand new building. The inside is gorgeous and features a sushi bar, grand staircase and incredible gift shop ($2000 chopsticks? Yes, they really do exist).

But have no fear, there is a deal to be found. Each Sunday East offers an extensive buffet. This is what led our fearless Stu to head East.

The greeting was found to be average upon arrival (you will definitely need to head to the hostess stand to be noticed). It's a bit of a disconnect from the open and ornate decoration - which, fittingly, are in Asian styling and a beautiful setting.

The buffet features traditional asian options of Japanese, Chinese and Thai dishes - primarily Chinese though. The choices are not too extensive, but suitable enough and everything was nicely prepared, fresh and replaced regularly. The buffet did not offer much of any opportunity to know about the table service so an experience on another trip may be different (after all, there isn't any ordering or anything to go by).

For a first visit, the East seems to be very reasonably priced for the Sunday buffet and the option would be a nice choice for couples and off season bargain hunters in the area with a carving for asian cuisine.

Overall, a Stu's Review of 3 of 5 for the buffet!

Taste Magazine's November Top Ten

Congratulations to The Green Monkey in Portsmouth, NH - #1 for November 2008!

1. The Green Monkey
2. Pesce Blue
3. The Dunaway
4. Victory
5. Jumpin' Jays
6. The Library Restaurant
7. Black Trumpet Bistro
8. Cafe Mediterraneo
9. Blue Latitudes
10. Radici

Home_14_BNo surprises with the Green Monkey - if you haven't visited to say hi to Deb, you're missing out! Even a die hard meat-a-holic falls in love with the Monkey's Pad Thai. Plus, how can you not have fun at a place where your martini comes with a plastic monkey? Just be sure you don't collect a troop all in one night!

Another spot we visited recently was The Dunaway. Now not everyone is a fan or cares to have foam involved with their dinner (it is a rather baffling cooking technique - plus how does one get full eating air?), but the Dunway does it just right. Making the dish more interesting without leaving you wondering if you will be part of a Willy Wonka special from ingesting all that air (Fizzy lift anyone?). And right now there is an pre-fix tasting menu that features the oldest apple variety and a dessert sampling that is outstanding (and apply of course).

Reservations are best for either of these choices - and just figure the diet starts in the new year anyway!

Old Village Inn Gets Silver Plate Review

Vlcsnap-301676 The Old Village Inn just got a Silver Plate review from TV Diner. For those of you who visit us in the off season, the Old Village Inn (OVI for short) is a long time staple of our dining package. In fact, there are vintage posters of the OVI package around the resort. Black and white posters even - a neat way to see what was offered in the 1980's when the resort had 40 rooms and just a pool. (Some of you still visit on the package and can vouch for this!)

The OVI is an Ogunquit staple. The cuisine is quaint New England traditional and the feel remains warm and friendly. Since this inn has been serving food and spirits to travelers and locals for over 100 years, it is the kind of restaurant where you can pop in for a pint or dine on hearty food.

Annoucing the Great Pumpkin Winner for 2008!

Greatpmpk4

Congratulations to Gage Kennie of Berwick, Maine - Our 2008 Great Pumpkin Winner! With the closest guess of 211 pounds, our great pumpkin weighed in at 211.4 - now that's some serious pumpkin pie. And Gage's prize? A free night's stay! (*Pumpkin not included)

A few other notables for this year's contest:

Smallest Guess: 14 pounds by Joe from Bradford, NH

Largest Guess: 2, 452 pounds by Dawn from Auburn, MA

Most adorable entry: With a guess of 138 pounds, Goal from Dover, NH had the cutest guess ballot (and some translation by good ol' Mom)

Most distant entry: With a guess of 215 pounds (so close!), Charles from Leavenworth, WA had the guess the greatest distance from Ogunquit (so far!)

Thanks to everyone who guessed - we had over 200 ballots!

Home of the Bed Race Champions

Bedrace1 We hinted at some of the fun to come on this year's Ogunquitfest for the first ever Bridge to Beach Bed Race - but never did we imagine that the rumors would spread far and wide and the crowds would gather for such a sight.

First, congratulations to everyone who participated and watched - based on the steering and flying team members, it was a feat to dodge costumed bed pushers and occasionally the beds themselves. There were however, plenty of fun and laughs.

Full details and a recap can be found at http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20081027-NEWS-81027033 . Don't be fooled by the 'large margin' that the Meadowmere won by - our hotel's bed just happened to keep all four wheels on. It's a definite advantage to have four. We plan on repeating this portion of the design - in other words, having four wheels at all times.

Racetrophy Other than that, our Ogunquit team will need to rethink the theme (two donkeys and two elephants pushed uncle sam on a bed marked 'economy or bust' and 'vote!' not so relevant next year!) and perhaps hold a trial run, training or try outs for bed pushers (we had a few concerns with the bed going OVER a team member. While the good news is, the bed held together, we'd rather not have any human speed bumps! It's just embarassing to say you were run over by a bed driven by uncle sam to guests. Far too close to Gramma Got Runover by a Reindeer!)

So thank you to everyone for the cheers (and jeers)! And a big congratulations to Rebecca & Bill on their wedding day - Thanks for being good sports about all the pictures!
