Ecomment Card from August 2007

On every e-comment card we ask 'What could be added to improve your next stay?'

It was a real pleasure to here from the first time guests below, joining us from Ashland, MA. Glad you folks gave a us a try!

"Nothing - you folks run a wonderful operation. Well, maybe (and this really can't be fixed easily) the size of the bathroom - kind of tight). BUT - we've stayed at places all over the world at all kinds of hotels including the Four Seasons, Marriotts, etc., and have been to Ogunquit at least 6 times, and were totally blown away by the friendliness, absolute cleanliness, and obsession to quality that your staff shows at every turn. Your staff were the BEST I've EVER dealt with at any hotel/motel. They made me feel like I was the only person that they were concerned with. To be honest, when we've driven by your property in the past, we just assumed it was a fancy motel and never considered staying there, or realized the "goodies" awaiting the guest in the back and throughout the property until we received a gift certificate. WOW - were we pleasantly surprised. We LOVED our stay at your resort. We hated to leave. Every detail is attended to, from check-in to check-out. Keep up the good work!"

Seeking Solitude in Ogunquit's Summer Rush

Lately, even though some of our guest shave chosen to visit us in Ogunquit in the busy summer, they are looking for a quiet getaway. Ogunquit is a lovely vacation spot – however, a trip to this area of Maine in August is anything but quiet. The town hustles and bustles with activity and people and most famously, traffic. Not the horn honking, outta my way kind – just the little town with one main road (Route 1) kind.

However, I thought – well there’s a challenge – if a guest arrives in August to our busy resort and sees that the town is quite the hot spot in Southern Maine, but was expecting a tranquil beach vacation – How can we assist them? So we’ve created a list of quiet spots close by – and yes, even at our Ogunquit hotel. For a few moments of peace . . .

Top Quiet Places in Ogunquit - Year Round

*Benches of Marginal Way – The path may get busy, but people tend to walk silently along in awe of the rocky cliffs. Marginalway_viewAlong this walk are benches dedicated by loving family members and friends. Most are set at the most scenic views and off the trail. Our favorite for solitude is actual two benches set in a wooded area looking back on Perkins Cove. The bench with the best view? Well, that’s up to you – though the one pictured here provides a gorgeous lookout over the Atlantic. Tip: Arrive early for sunset seating – even better, grab coffee in our lobby and visit in the peace of early morning.

*Little Beach – Sneak out the back of the Meadowmere onto Bourne Lane, pick up Shore Road towards Perkins Cove and then make a detour. Take Israel Head Road to the water where a miniature light house marks Little Beach. While the town is famous for Ogunquit Beach’s miles of white sand, Little Beach is a quiet nook set among the Marginal Way cliffs. Tip: If you want sand, time your trip for low tide. Otherwise, just lay out on the cliffs and relax to the waves.

*Dorethea Jacobs Grant Common – Most people miss this gem on their way to Ogunquit Beach as they head onto Obeds Lane from the north end of the hotel. Just a 50 yard stroll down this lane, take a turn into the Ogunquit Heritage Museum and pick up the gravel path into this peaceful park. Bring a blanket and settle in to enjoy this memorial common. Tip: Order a Village Food Market basket from our in-room gifts and plan a picnic – hours of quiet with a delicious twist.

Littlebeachlighthouse_2 *Josias River Park – Crossing through our back parking area towards Bourne Lane, a little pathway begins right at the trolley stop. Head down the slope to a river side clearing and enjoy this quiet conservation oasis. Tip: Bring a fishing pole – this spot has been a local fishing hole for generations.

*East Meadow BBQ Pits – Set behind our East Meadow building – ‘the RedBuilding' – the BBQ area is a peaceful place for tossing around a football or Frisbee, lounging in a chair and seeking solitude while on property. Tip: Book early and choose this building for your room to have easy access to this quiet spot.

And finally – if a quiet is a must for your room while in Ogunquit, upgrade your room choice to our South Meadow Luxury Suites or our Honeymoons Suites. A little more, but you’ll have your own private Jacuzzi to enjoy and quiet location within the Meadowmere. Be flexible in your search for tranquility – these rooms book early!

Why Ogunquit is cloudy this morning . . .

Hospitality is a funny business - one sees all sides of people since they are temporarily living with you. Working in a hotel - especially in Ogunquit, where a busy summer crunch can put you under a lot of pressure - takes a certain personality. Trying to find those good people is another challenge. And every now and then, they find you.

This past winter such a person joined our team. She loved our hotel, she had grown up in the area, had moved to Florida and through the ways and means of life, had returned to Ogunquit. She knew our computer system, she had worked for an outstanding property for years, she had the energy that comes with youth and her personality was brighter than Florida's sunshine.  Our guests instantly loved her at our front desk.

Today, we lost this wonderful person from our lives from cancer. One can point to many reasons that this could happen - poor access to health care, lifestyle, an advanced cancer type. An endless list. Though it could be any or all of those things, that list doesn't matter. What is truly important is that she has peace - for the many laughs she gave us in a very short time and the many people she made smile so effortlessly, the quick passing was a blessing to her and her family. Though difficult to believe and more so to understand by how quickly and suddenly such a young person could be lost.

Ogunquit is a wonderful place to visit. And while today at the Meadowmere we are saddened and mourn the loss of our friend, the sun is predicted to come out today and our guests will head to the beaches, shops and attractions. Perhaps she's just sharing a little more of her Florida sunshine one last time with us from a better place.

Our thoughts, prayers and support go out to her family from ours.

Southern Maine Beaches A "Beach Buddy" Ranking from the Today Show

OgunquitbeachBeaches are the ideal place to spend a summer vacation - and Ogunquit Beach is one of the most famous in Maine. However, if you need a change of pace when here - take a quick drive south of the Meadowmere and check out Short Sands beach (great for families) and Long Sands Beach (fun surf spot). Our southern beaches were just revealed on the Today Show as Beach Buddies, ranking 90% of better on safe water testing.

How does Ogunquit rank? As one of Maine's most important water attraction, Maine Healthy Beaches and the Ogunquit Conservation Committee work hard to study the area and monitor the water quality. An important part of keeping Ogunquit Beach beautiful is responsible local growth and responsible tourism. We had one guest today that did not want to participate in Project Planet, a towel reuse program where if you want new towel, leave them on the floor; hang the towels up if you want to save water and reuse. She simply said that she was on vacation and paying to use as many towels as she wanted. In this day and age where billions of people struggle for access to clean water and our cumulative effect on our world is having a staggering environmental impact, I'm not sure she should have said so much right at our front desk - but it is her decision and we respect that.

So maybe on your vacation you take time off from the weight of eco-worries, like our current guest. But if you want to reuse your towel, by all means help do your part. We promise, we'll give you a clean one whenever you ask!

From our friends in Auburn, MA who join us every season - already their fifth visit this year!

"We have stayed many times at the Meadowmere, and each time we are never disappointed! The staff is so friendly and welcoming, and although Ogunquit was so crowded, we never felt as though we were being rushed out of the property-quite the opposite! We will definitely be back, and we will continue to tell all our friends to visit as well!

Thank you again for the outstanding service, immaculate rooms and grounds, and the exceptional value!"

Thank you and see you in the fall for the wonderful foilage!

Our Ogunquit Resort Entrance

Resortsign_2August has started with a rush - and hot beach weather.

However, this shot of our resort sign along Main Street/Rt 1 was taken by our over night staff in the early morning hours. The gardens really do look great this year (Thanks Mona & company!) , but the number one comment - 'Wow - no cars!'

It was so unbelievable that Jack had to capture the moment on film.

Sometimes it's the small stuff :)

Enjoy the peaceful shot!
